About

Save the Date! We’re planning a Southern Screen Summit for March 2025.

  • The Southern Filmmakers Collective (SFC) is a volunteer-driven organisation made up of Otago & Southland screen professionals. We exist to support each others’ efforts and foster the creation of Southern film, TV, and gaming projects.

  • To avoid the frustration of being a lorn and lonely Southern filmmaker! We’ll hook you up with industry connections, practical assistance, and moral support. Members receive:

EVENTS: Exclusive invites to virtual and in-person events, including our popular Monday Meet-Up—held online on the last Monday of each month.

RESOURCES: Subscription to our monthly newsletter, The Collective Voice, with details about education & training opportunities, job listings, regional funding announcements, and SFC member projects.

DISCOUNTS: Price reductions on Film Otago Southland events, regional workshops, and the annual Southern Screen Summit.

NETWORKING: Access to scores of Southern screenwriters, directors & producers! Many of our current SFC members are seasoned veterans with years of AoNZ experience. We know 1,001 ways to turn regional screen dreams into realities.

  • We welcome Otago & Southland individuals who are involved—or aspire to be involved—in the creation of film, TV, and gaming projects.

Our membership roster currently includes Southern directors, producers, screenwriters and crew of all ages.

Because we champion local filmmaking, members must either reside in Otago or Southland or have a demonstrable close personal connection to the region.

  • Start by becoming a member of the Southern Filmmakers Collective. We organise many events, including monthly virtual meetings, where you can describe your project & your goals.

Then take a minute to glance at news about our members’ work. You may find a potential friend, collaborator or mentor in the mix.

We’ve also created an extensive resources section with links to regional screen bodies, funding sources, national networking events, training opportunities, and more.

  • Film Otago Southland (FOS) is a not-for-profit Trust that promotes screen production in the Otago & Southland regions. It has a number of goals, including:

    • Attracting, facilitating and marketing productions in the area

    • Developing the screen sector for regional business

    • Assisting with government policy development

    • Maximising opportunities for regional film professionals

SFC was born when Film Otago Southland found that Southern screen professionals were lacking a unified regional voice and a forum for development. They’ve provided us with advice, seed funding, and collaborative ideas.

To help Southern creatives gain a foothold in the industry, we often work closely with FOS on regional training initiatives & events. Have a say in these plans by becoming an SFC member!
